Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, has resigned.
So last night over dinner,
I told my kids about the decision that I'm sharing with you today.
I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister
after the party selects its next leader through a robust nationwide competitive process.
The 53-year-old has been Canada's prime minister since 2015
and leader of the Liberal Party since 2013.
This morning, I advised the governor general that we need a new session of parliament.
Trudeau's father, Pierre Trudeau, served as prime minister from 1968 to 1979.
His son energized the Canadian Liberal Party when he took over more than a decade ago.
But recent polls have shown his popularity sharply declining.
Members of his own party have expressed their concerns publicly about his ability to lead the party into the future,
especially with the upcoming general elections.
This country deserves a real choice in the next election,
and it has become clear to me that if I'm having to fight internal battles,
I cannot be the best option in that election.
Trudeau remains prime minister until a new party leader is chosen.
As that search happens, Canada's parliament will be suspended until March 24th.
