It's a popular destination beloved by American tourists.
But now the US State Department is issuing a level two travel warning for Italy,
urging Americans to exercise increased caution due to the risk of terrorist violence.
They say that terrorism can happen any place at any time,
but they're not giving details to the public.
It's not just Italy.
The State Department has also issued level two advisories for France, Germany, the UK, and Spain.
According to the State Department, terrorists may attack with little or no warning.
Prime targets include popular tourist sites, hotels, restaurants, and transportation centers like airports.
Travel experts say the best way to stay out of harm's way is to keep a low profile
by not dressing like a stereotypical American.
If you're traveling to Europe, you're trying to fit in.
So something like this, no, don't wear it.
Don't wear this. Don't wear a sweatshirt with an American sports team on it.
You just don't want to stick out.
And this makes everybody know I'm an American.
If you decide to take the trip,
hopefully you won't face scenes like we saw last summer
when American tourists in Barcelona were pelted with water guns.
There's a great saying: when in Rome, do as the Romans do,
and I think it's a great guide no matter whether you're in Rome or elsewhere,
dressing as much as you can like the locals.
