Shop class is back at schools across the country, and lots of kids are signing up.
These aren't contractors;
they're teenagers, and this is their classroom.
In addition to reading, writing, and arithmetic,
this freshman class is also learning how to build a house from the ground up.
from the foundation to the framing,
to the drywall, electrical, and plumbing.
"Once we lay them out, then we can put all the studs where they belong."
It used to be called wood shop, but today it's called carpentry and construction
at Piscataway Magnet High School in New Jersey.
This is just one of many vocational classes being revived for the 21st century
in high schools across the USA.
Most students have now realized that college isn't the only pathway to success.
The idea is that these teenagers can immediately get a good-paying job right out of high school.
"How many of you plan on pursuing a job in this trade?"
That's almost everyone.
There's also a welding class, often called metal shop,
and this is the culinary arts program, once called home economics.
They're whipping up lots of yummy dishes.
Once they're done here, the world is theirs to taste and enjoy.
