In 2 days, 10 lives were radically changed through the gift of living donor organ donation.
Surgeons at The Ohio State University set a new record by performing a synchronized chain of 20 procedures,
culminating in 10 people having new-to-them kidneys.
While many people live in the final stages of kidney failure on dialysis,
a type of treatment that helps the body remove excess fluid and waste products from the blood when their kidneys are not able to.
The regime can be grueling.
There are 104,840 people on the transplant waitlist.
According to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network,
90,506 need a kidney.
Because of this transplant chain, 10 people were removed from that list,
hopefully shortening the waiting time for others.
The transplant chain took months of planning and hundreds of hours of labor from the medical teams.
Ohio State's surgical director of kidney transplantation says "This is thanks to our donors, our heroes."
